# Gravestone Design Inspiration: Why I Look to Real Cemeteries

There is no shortage of gravestone design inspiration online. But when we want to understand what makes an old grave actually *look* old, there is still no better reference than a real cemetery.

Historic gravestones were not designed as generic symbols of death. Their shapes, lettering, carvings and proportions reflect the period and place in which they were made. Walk through an older burial ground and you will find an enormous visual vocabulary: simple tablets beside elaborate monuments, crisp inscriptions beside stones softened by more than a century of weather, and symbols that once carried meanings familiar to the people who chose them.

That history is a major part of the inspiration behind [Elegy & Ivy](https://www.elegyandivy.com/) and the [custom gravestone props](https://www.elegyandivy.com/custom-gravestones) created in the studio.

## Historic Gravestone Shapes Tell Us When a Cemetery Was Built

![historic-monuments-and-ledger-graves.jpg](https://www.elegyandivy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/historic-monuments-and-ledger-graves.jpg.jpg?width=800&height=600&name=historic-monuments-and-ledger-graves.jpg.jpg)

One of the first things to notice in a historic cemetery is that gravestones rarely share one universal shape.

There are arched tablets, pointed stones, shouldered markers, obelisks and much more elaborate monuments. As tastes and funerary traditions changed, cemetery landscapes changed with them.

That variety matters when looking for gravestone design inspiration. The silhouette alone can do a surprising amount of storytelling before you ever read the name carved into the stone.

It is also one of the details that separates a convincing cemetery scene from a row of identical Halloween tombstones.

## Lettering Is Part of the Gravestone Design

Historic lettering was not simply text placed onto an otherwise finished monument. Names, dates and epitaphs were part of the overall composition.

![clasped-hands-farewell-gravestone-symbol.jpg](https://www.elegyandivy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/clasped-hands-farewell-gravestone-symbol.jpg.jpg?width=800&height=600&name=clasped-hands-farewell-gravestone-symbol.jpg.jpg)

Letter size, spacing and placement worked alongside decorative carving and the shape of the stone itself. Different eras and individual stonecarvers developed recognizable approaches, which is one reason modern typography can sometimes make an otherwise convincing reproduction feel unexpectedly new.

If you're curious about how these details translate into a finished prop, the Elegy & Ivy shop has a deeper look at [what makes a gravestone prop look realistic](https://shop.elegyandivy.com/blogs/in-the-studio/what-makes-a-gravestone-prop-look-realistic).

## Gravestone Symbols Add Another Layer of History

![Historic gravestone with a carved pointing-up hand symbol](https://www.elegyandivy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/pointing-up-hand-gravestone-symbol.jpg.jpg?width=800&height=1067&name=pointing-up-hand-gravestone-symbol.jpg.jpg)

Some of the most interesting gravestone design inspiration comes from the symbols carved above and around the inscription.

Victorian cemetery art includes roses, pointing hands, clasped hands, anchors, wheat, willows, urns and many other motifs. Earlier New England gravestones can be considerably darker, with winged skulls, hourglasses and other memento mori imagery.

These carvings were more than decoration. They formed a visual language of mourning, mortality, faith and remembrance.

You can explore examples in the [Victorian Gravestone Symbol Library](https://www.elegyandivy.com/victorian-gravestone-symbol-library) or wander farther back in time through the [Colonial Gravestone Symbol Library](https://www.elegyandivy.com/colonial-gravestone-symbol-library).

## Age Creates Details That Cannot Be Designed All at Once

![Broken historic gravestones with irregular weathering and lichen](https://www.elegyandivy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/naturally-weathered-broken-gravestones.jpg.jpg?width=800&height=600&name=naturally-weathered-broken-gravestones.jpg.jpg)

One of the most useful lessons in a cemetery is that age is inconsistent.

Some inscriptions remain unexpectedly crisp. Others nearly disappear. Staining develops beneath carvings and along surfaces where water travels. Biological growth appears in some places but not others. Stones settle, lean and weather according to their environment.

That irregularity is part of what makes historic cemeteries visually convincing. Real age is rarely symmetrical.

The [Elegy & Ivy gallery](https://www.elegyandivy.com/gallery) includes examples of how historic references, monument styles and varied aging can translate into cemetery props.

## Using Historic Inspiration Without Recreating a Specific Grave

![Historic gravestone with carved portrait, raised lettering and decorative floral details](https://www.elegyandivy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/historic-gravestone-carving-and-lettering.jpg.jpg?width=800&height=1067&name=historic-gravestone-carving-and-lettering.jpg.jpg)

Historic reference does not have to mean copying a particular gravestone.

A single cemetery visit might inspire the silhouette of one monument, the lettering proportions of another and a carved motif found several rows away. Studying real graves creates a larger visual vocabulary that can then inform something entirely new.

For Halloween displays, that can mean pairing an historically inspired monument with a decidedly less historical occupant. The [made-to-order custom name and epitaph gravestone](https://shop.elegyandivy.com/products/made-to-order-custom-name-and-epitaph-gravestone-with-moss-effect-and-weathering), for example, lets the inscription be personal while the finished piece still belongs visually in a cemetery setting.

For additional design choices, the [Build Your Own Gravestone](https://shop.elegyandivy.com/products/build-your-own-gravestone) offers another route to a personalized cemetery prop.

## The Best Gravestone Design Inspiration Is Still Outside

Photographs and historical collections are invaluable, but cemeteries make it much easier to understand how all of these details work together.

You can see the scale of a monument against the landscape, the depth of a carving in changing light and the way a collection of graves from different decades creates a cemetery that feels accumulated rather than arranged.

That is the part worth studying.
